For investors with sufficient capital, the futures markets provide the opportunity to speculate on price movements in a wide array of traditional commodities and financial products. There are futures and option contracts available on grains, precious metals, livestock, energies, currencies, interest rates, and stock indices. These markets also provide an efficient and inexpensive means for investors to hedge stock portfolios or interest rate commitments. Short sales are effected as easily as long ones, and there are no up-tick rules. Margin requirements range from about 2% - 10% of contract size. By way of example, the E-Mini S&P 500 contract, representing about $65,000 worth of stock, carries a margin requirement of about $5,000. To be sure, leverage cuts both ways, and you are cautioned that losses are as easily achieved as profits.
